There’s a Training Gap in Spanish-Speaking Churches.

These Leaders are Doing Something About it.

There are about 170 Spanish-speaking congregations in Fresno, but fewer than 5% of pastors have received formal theological or leadership training. Continue reading to learn how local leaders and the Center for Community Transformation are challenging this reality.

“Carolina invited me to be a part of Certificado, but I was nervous because I didn’t have the discipline. [Still,] I took the step, [and] everything this certificate has given me has been wonderful. [Through] Certificado, I developed the habit of studying, and was able to apply for my citizenship, and now I am a citizen.”

In Fresno, more than 170 Spanish-speaking congregations, fewer than 5% of pastors have received formal theological or leadership training. Many Spanish-speaking churches, particularly in rural areas, are led by bi- or tri-vocational pastors who juggle ministry alongside full-time work. Formal theological education is often inaccessible due to language barriers, cost, and the time commitment required by traditional seminary programs.

This lack of access doesn’t reflect a lack of desire. On the contrary, the Center for Community Transformation (CCT) consistently sees a deep hunger among Hispanic pastors and lay leaders to grow in leadership, biblical understanding, and ministry effectiveness, especially in areas that directly impact families and children.

Across the Central Valley, Spanish-speaking churches play a vital role in nurturing faith, supporting families, and strengthening communities. Yet many of these congregations carry significant responsibility with limited access to training, resources, and support. At CCT, we believe that when leaders are equipped, communities flourish. That conviction is what drives our work and is the reason why our Ministry Training initiative exists. Through Certificado, leaders have the opportunity to receive a Community Transformation Certificate and/or the Children’s Ministry Certificate.

Certificado: Equipping Leaders for Transformation

CCT works alongside churches, schools, and organizations across the Central Valley to pursue shalom, empowering leaders and communities. CCT has walked closely with Spanish-speaking congregations, hearing firsthand about the challenges leaders face as they seek to faithfully serve their churches while navigating economic, cultural, and systemic barriers. These conversations have consistently pointed to one pressing need: accessible, high-quality training in Spanish that is both theologically grounded and practically relevant.

Certificado was created in direct response to this need. Offered as an online course in Spanish, Certificado prepares Hispanic pastors and leaders with leadership training and community transformation skills that are immediately applicable in their congregational and community contexts. By removing barriers of language, cost, and geography, Certificado creates a pathway for leaders who might otherwise be excluded from formal training. Through Certificado, leaders gain tools to strengthen their ministries, serve their communities more effectively, and lead with confidence rooted in faith and understanding.

The first Certificado course CCT designed was the “Certificate of Ministry in Community Transformation,” a five-module program teaching pastors and leaders biblical foundations, spiritual disciplines, economic tools, and civic engagement strategies for community transformation.

Centering Children: Why Children’s Ministry Matters

As CCT listened more deeply to Spanish-speaking congregations, another critical gap emerged: children’s ministry. Many churches struggle to engage children in meaningful worship and faith formation, not due to a lack of care, but because of limited training, leadership development, and financial resources.

The Children’s Ministry Certificate was developed to address this gap. This initiative equips churches with the knowledge, tools, and resources needed to prioritize children’s faith formation from an early age. Rather than viewing children’s ministry as childcare or a secondary concern, this program reframes it as essential discipleship work.

Through culturally relevant, faith-centered training, the Children’s Ministry Certificate helps leaders:

  • Understand early childhood faith development
  • Integrate children more fully into worship and congregational life
  • Equip caregivers and parents as partners in faith formation
  • Build sustainable, engaging children’s ministries across the Central Valley

Looking Ahead: Expanding Training Where It’s Needed Most

The Community Transformation and the Children’s Ministry Certificate are part of a broader vision: responding faithfully to the real needs of Spanish-speaking congregations. Both certificates address the widespread lack of accessible training in Spanish, particularly in leadership, theology, and ministry development.

As CCT continues to listen and learn, we see a growing opportunity to expand this work even further. That’s why we are exploring the development of a third certificate in Biblical Theology, continuing our commitment to provide high-quality, culturally relevant resources that equip leaders to serve their congregations and communities with depth and confidence.

At CCT, we believe the Church is strongest when its leaders are supported, equipped, and connected. By investing in training that is accessible, practical, and rooted in faith, we are partnering with Spanish-speaking churches to build a future where leaders thrive, children are nurtured in their faith, and communities experience lasting transformation.
