What Happened When One Entrepreneur Joined Rural Ignite Business Accelerator?

Eight miles from the entrance of Sequoia National Park, where travelers from around the world come to witness the awe of the Giant Sequoias, a small, six-room lodge is becoming a powerful example of what’s possible through rural entrepreneurship. For Cyndi Gerten, owner of Cyndi’s Snowline Lodge, rebuilding her business has not only been a personal journey, but one strengthened through the support of rural business training like the Center for Community Transformation’s Rural Ignite Business Accelerator. For Cyndi, this is not just a business, it is a calling.

After years of operating the lodge, life took an unexpected turn. Following the loss of her husband, Cyndi made the difficult decision to close. What once bustled with visitors slowly went quiet. Many assumed the story had ended. But for Cyndi, it was only the beginning.

“I’m trying to demonstrate to everyone that nothing’s impossible with God,” she shares. “Everybody thought it was impossible to reopen this place again. And now they’re seeing that nothing’s impossible.”

Today, Cyndi’s Snowline Lodge is coming back to life, not just as a place to stay, but as a place of connection, restoration, and hope.

Cyndi’s Snowline Lodge is More Than a Business. It’s a Ministry of Hospitality.

Travelers do not just stop at Cyndi’s Snowline Lodge for a room, they come for coffee, conversation, and something deeper.

Cyndi recently began offering coffee by donation, creating a welcoming space for visitors passing through the mountains. What starts as a simple cup of coffee often turns into something more meaningful.

“After they receive their coffee, I ask them if I can say a prayer for them,” she explains.

With guests arriving from all over the world, many from different cultures and languages, Cyndi sees every interaction as an opportunity to serve, listen, and share compassion.

In a rural area where resources are limited and distances are long, this kind of intentional hospitality is transforming the experience of both travelers and the local community.

The Unique Challenges of Rural Entrepreneurship

Running a business in a remote mountain location comes with its own set of challenges.

From difficulty finding employees to managing supplies and navigating unpredictable weather, rural entrepreneurs like Cyndi must constantly adapt. Unlike businesses in urban areas, her livelihood depends heavily on seasonal visitors traveling to the national park.

“It’s a whole different thing being up in the mountains,” she says. “My income relies a lot on people visiting the park.”

These challenges are real, but so is the opportunity. And that is where the CCT comes in.

Fueling Growth Through the Rural Ignite Business Accelerator

Cyndi’s journey took a pivotal turn when she joined the Rural Ignite Business Accelerator, part of CCT’s broader Entrepreneurship Initiative.

Designed specifically for entrepreneurs in underserved and rural communities, this initiative equips business owners with practical tools, mentorship, and a supportive network to help their businesses grow and thrive.

For Cyndi, the impact was immediate.

“What really attracted me was that opportunities like this are usually only offered in urban areas,” she says. “The fact that they focused on rural businesses—that was huge.”

Through the program, she gained practical skills she could apply right away—especially in understanding her costs and managing expenses more effectively.

“The expenses can accumulate so quickly,” she explains. “Learning to break down the cost of each thing you offer—that was extremely useful.”

She also discovered new opportunities to expand her business through food offerings, thanks to training in culinary pathways and cottage food certification.

“It opened the door for a lot of opportunities,” she says. “There’s so much more I can do now.”

The Power of Community and Connection

Beyond the tools and training, one of the most impactful parts of the accelerator was something less tangible, but just as important: community.

“That was actually one of the things that attracted me,” Cyndi shares. “The networking.”

Through the program, she connected with other entrepreneurs facing similar challenges and found encouragement, ideas, and collaboration.

“You realize a lot of people have the same issues you do,” she says. “Hearing how they solve their problems helps you solve yours.”

Those connections did not end when the program did. Today, relationships formed in the accelerator are turning into partnerships, friendships, and even customers.

“We’re starting to integrate other people’s businesses into this one,” she says. “It’s been a huge opportunity.”

A Vision Still Unfolding

Cyndi believes something special is happening at Cyndi’s Snowline Lodge.

“I can’t really put my finger on it,” she says, “but God’s doing something very special with this property.”

As she prepares for renovations and future growth, she envisions a space that reflects both hard work and a higher purpose, a place built not just by one, but through a collaborative effort of community, faith, and perseverance.

“It’s going to be something that shows the glory of God,” she says.

Take the Next Step in Your Entrepreneurial Journey

Cyndi’s story is just one example of what is possible when entrepreneurs are equipped, supported, and connected, no matter how rural their location may be.
